Game 1 at St Louis Blake Snell (StL) v. Eduardo Rodriguez (SFG)
The Cardinals won home field advantage in this best of five playoff given their superior record during the regular season. Giants drew first blood in the first when Carlos Santana laced a double to knock in Andrew McCutchen. 1-0 SFG. Tellez launched a three run missile to give the Cards a 3-1 lead after two innings. The fact Tellez was a lefty set off alarms in the Giants' front office. Khris Davis hit a RBI single in the top of the 4th to cut the lead to 3-2. In the 6th, Javier Baez knotted the score at 3 with an infield single. St. Louis fought back in the bottom of the 6th, plating 2 runs on two sacrifice flies. Cards led 5-3 after 6 innings. But the Giants said not so fast. In the 7th inning, Kyle Tucker drilled a two run shot over the right field fence. 5-5 after 7. The bullpens came into the game and shut down both offenses, forcing the game into the 10th.
Kyle Tucker came to the rescue, knocking a triple in the 10th and scoring on a Swanson throwing error. SFG's Familia induced a STL double play to save the day.

Game 2 at St Louis
McCullers (STL) v. Odorizzi (SFG)
Alot of discussion took place in the front office regarding who to start in game 2. The Cards hit lefties better than righties but the Giants lefties are better starters. Bottom line take a chance and go with Odorizzi. McCullers is an excellent pitcher so that decision seemed like a no brainer.
The gamble failed to pay off. Cardinals roughed Odorizzi up for 4 runs in 5 innings. The trouble started in the 3rd on a Suarez RBI single and Tellez' two run double. Vazquez drilled a home run to cut the lead to 3-1 but the Cards sent Odorizzi to the showers with a run in the 4th. Gary Sanchez launched a two run shot in the 6th. Cards led 6-1 after 6 and it looked like a long night for Giants' nation.
But the Giants fought back in the 7th. Danny Santana and Christian Vazquez doubled for 1 run and Carlos Santana hit a 2 run shot over the center field wall to cut the lead to 6-4. Unfortunately, the Giants ran out of steam and the Cards held on for a 6-4 win.

HRs: Santana, Vazquez, Sanchez
With the series tied 1-1, the teams fly to San Francisco for games 3 and four.

Game 3 Rogers (SFG)v. Banda (STL)
A pair of southpaws took the mound in game 3 with the series tied at a game apiece.
The Giants cobbled together a walk, a single and Javier Baez double in the second to take an early 2-0 lead in the second. Pitchers dominated the rest of the game until the bottom of the 7th. Trevor Rogers was running out gas after going 7.1 innings and fanning 9 batters. Barnes came in and after Dansby Swanson knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly, the Giants pen shut the door and SFG escaped with a 2-1 win and a 2-1 advantage in the best of 5.

Game 4 at San Francisco
Luis H Garcia (STL) v. Danny Duffy (SFG)
Media analysts always predict a slug fest when the fourth pitcher in a rotation takes the mound and today was no exception as the Cards out slugged the Giants 10-9 in an 11 inning contest. The Cards roughed up SFG lefty Danny Duffy for 5 runs and sent him to the showers after 4 innings of pure torture. The only thing that kept the Giants in the game was 4 unearned runs and 1 earned run which sent STL starter Luis H Garcia to the dugout after 2.2 innings. The Cardinals pounded the Giant pitching staff for 14 hits and drew 7 walks over the 11 inning fiasco. No SFG pitcher was immune from the relentless onslaught. The Giants hitters fought back with a 12 hit barrage and 6 walks but it was not enough. Cardinal PH Ryan McKenna laced a two run double in the right center gap to put the Giants out of their misery. The series was now tied 2-2 with the rubber match to be held back in St. Louis.

Game 5 at St Louis
Snell (STL) v E.Rodriguez (SFG)
The sellout crowd was looking forward to a major celebration. After all, the Cards won more games than the Giants in the regular season and Blake Snell had much better stats than Eduardo Rodriguez.... except for stamina.
Carlos Santana led off the game with a single. Snell punched out Nimmo with a K. Andrew McCutchen drew a walk, sending Santana to second who scored on a Zimmerman single. 1-0 SFG after the top of the 1st.
The Cardinals answered in the third. Castellanos doubled and scored on a surprising two run homer off the bat of Cam Gallagher. 2-1 STL after 3.
The starters dominated the game. Snell went 6 innings and allowed only 1 run and fanned 6 while Rodriguez went 8 innings and allowed 2 runs while fanning 7. STL held a 2-1 lead going into the top of the 9th. Could they hold the lead ??
Not in this game. France hit a one out single. Difo replaced France as a pinch runner. McCullers took the mound. Tucker doubled to right. With Difo at 3rd and Tucker at second, McCullers uncorked a wild pitch, sending in Difo with the tying run and leaving Tucker at 3rd with the lead run. Javier Baez, grumbling throughout the day after being dropped to 7th in the lineup, hit a hard line drive to deep center, driving in Tucker with the lead run. SFG took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the 9th without E. Rod who left in an exhausted heap after 8 innings.
Sergio Romo entered the fray and allowed just one hit in the ninth to seal the deal and hand SFG a 3-2 win and a first round win in the playoffs. The Giants now head onto to the NL finals.
W: E. Rodriguez L: McCullers S: Romo
HR: Gallagher
