Trade 1 (9/11/2021):
Rangers receive: Ethan Elliott [ML], Matt Brash [ML], Ji-Hwan Bae [ML], NYM 2nd Round Draft Pick
Mets receive: Dallas Keuchel [2/A2/A3], Garrett Hampson [1/A1/A2/A3], TEX 2nd Round Draft Pick
Mets receive: Dallas Keuchel [2/A2/A3], Garrett Hampson [1/A1/A2/A3], TEX 2nd Round Draft Pick
At the time of this trade The Mets were first in the NLE with a record of 56-27 while the Rangers were last in the ALW with a record of 36-48 so for the Mets the objective was to add depth for the current season while the Rangers were clearly trading for the future.
The Mets receive 33 year old southpaw SP Dallas Keuchel who is having a very good year in the B1G league with a 3.99 ERA, 126/47 K/BB, 12 QS (.667%), 14 GBDP and he will pitch again next season though one will reasonably expect his projection will down some as he is scuffling in real life this season. They also receive 26 year UT Hampson (VG @ 2B, AV @ SS, LF, CF, RF) who is projected at .260/.317/.400, 11HR, 25 SB but is far under-performing for the Rangers at .213/.267/.277 perhaps because he has been underplayed at 21 PT%. Both players will likely help the Mets in 2021 and perhaps beyond.
The Rangers receive 23 year old RHSP Brash, Rated #9 by BA and #10 by MLB Pipeline in their recent midseason ranking for Seattle prospects (BA wrote"... His fastball has been up to 99 mph with high spin rates, his hard, tilting slider earns plus grades and his changeup has flashed plus, although it needs further development. Brash's command and control have been scattered, but the quality of his stuff has observers buzzing.") Also 24 year old LHSP Elliott MLB #12 and BA #20 in the loaded Padres rankings. (BA wrote, "At 6-foot-3, 180 pounds, Elliott's abnormal extension from a three-quarters slot allows his 86-90 mph fastball to play well above its radar gun readings. He struck out 71 in 58 innings (2.95 ERA) at High-A Fort Wayne before a midseason promotion.) If one the two of these SP pan out it is a good trade value for Keuchel; if both do it is excellent value And finally 22 year old UT Bae who plays SS, 2B & CF and was rated BA #19 and MLB #22 in the recent Pirates rankings. (MLB wrote, "...Defensively, Bae continues to see time both at shortstop, his original position, and second, where he’s seen most of his time. There are some questions as to whether he’ll stay on the dirt long term, with some curious to see how his speed might play in center field. If everything clicks, Bae could turn into a David Fletcher type performer in the big leagues in the future.) Indeed he has been playing some CF at AA this season. He is basically a less powerful but likely faster future replace for Hampson.
Art and I discussed several draft pick configurations before settling on swapping 2nd round picks which likely nets the Mets another top 40 pick while my pick will be just outside of the top 50 and I cleared $3 million plus in payroll for next years team (off season FA as well as arbitration costs).
